As I started to write my daily countdown to November 2, I looked for a special message to write. Seven is a special number and it needed to be handled well and with great thought.
I always do a little research first and let the powers that be lead me in what to write. As I began surfing the internet, the very first headline I came across was: Seven banks closed this week. I stared in amazement at the headline and my stomach knotted. This was a sign.
I wondered if the financial crisis that put us in this mess will ever go away. Will there be any of those special small banks, community banks or your neighborhood banker left for us to go to for help? Or will we only have those few large banks or government run banks to go to for financial services? Let’s hope the final outcome will be similar to “It’s a Wonderful Life” and the townspeople will be there to fight against the evil Mr. Potter’s bank and trust.
I am writing this for a Monday posting and today is Sunday….the 7th day of the week. This was another sign.
My head went straight to the story of The Battle of Jericho. Joshua fought the Battle of Jericho and the walls came tumbling down (I know you are singing that in your head right now!) Joshua was instructed to establish a beachhead in his new homeland and he had to get past a big wall first. The plan was to make some noise with a horn every day for 6 days and circle the city saying nothing. On the last day – day 7 – he would appear to do the same thing but this time was different. They would do it 7 times and the walls would fall. Jericho would be won!
Can Liberty similarly win, I wondered? Is this our chance to spend the next week circling up in our own home towns by making phone calls to encourage people to get out and vote. We could stand on corners with signs of our favorite candidates. We could plan a Ballot BBQ to talk with friends about the candidates, amendments and judges. We could spend the next 6 days educating ourselves and others and getting ready for Day 7.
“Yes, we can!” I thought as I sang “Joshua fought the battle” all day in my head.
Then the last sign appeared.
As we drove home after Sunday dinner with the kids, the full moon in the sky over America followed us all the way home on the highway and then in our city streets. It was sitting in the dark navy blue sky all alone without a star anywhere to be found. It was watching over us and guiding us home. As we entered our neighborhood, the moon glow lit up our yard as bright as any man-made light pole ever could. That glow gave me comfort and assured me that all is well in America and the one who put the moon up tonight was watching over us.
The signs were there and have been all along. We saw them when the new grassroots activists showed up and said “Enough!” “No More Bailouts” “Stop Spending” “Liberty for All!” Those special signs and all those special people will save our special country. We have 7 days and on Day 7 – we will speak loudly and clearly and shout down the walls of tyranny in America. Do your part this week and say a prayer for your country and sing this song in your head too!

The financial crisis is not the only thing that got us into this situation. It is also two wars not paid for, deficits and debt, an infrastructure that is crumbling and needs 2 trillion dollars, it is the failure of trickle down, and the failure of not recognizing globalization in which we are giving up middle class jobs. You cannot create jobs if the jobs are going overseas. And you cannot solve one problem without jobs. And all you get is the constitution and God and country from the right. More social conservatism like George Bush is not the answer.
You’re kidding, right? You think we are and have been on the right track since Obama and his band of thugs got into office? Open your eyes and look around you. You are right about the jobs. Where are all the jobs he promised? Where are the “shovel ready” jobs?
The Bush economy was a house of cards. Not only did we have a financial and housing crisis, brought on by both parties and Alan Greenspan. But the trickle down failed as we watched our jobs go overseas, our money go to Iraq, and the neglect of our infrastructure. The tax cuts did not prevent a recession, did not create jobs, and did not create prosperity. We got the tax cuts and I saw factories close. It is a potential 2 billion cheap laborers that want our jobs. And because of those huge numbers of cheap laborers we will be pressured on jobs and wages. It was Bush, who said “stay the course” on both the economy and the wars and he ran them into the ground. It will take some 10 to 20 years to clean up his mess. While Obama seems to be lost, republicans fail each and every time to support the little guy.
My question. How do you create jobs when jobs are going overseas?
We hear the support for small business, but how do we support small business in small towns where factories have closed?
How do we compete with 2 billion cheap laborers at a dollar an hour?
And how do we solve our deficits and debt, if we can’t create jobs?
Today, the fed is printing money, we have had the tax cuts and that is SPENT money, and the republicans keep saying more tax cuts and we have lost our jobs. So, with our jobs gone, how is more printing of money and more in tax cuts will it create jobs?
You still have to invest in the country, in the people, and in the future. It is called pragmatism and not ideology which failed. And all we hear is the constitution and God and country. Well that will not fly.
