Kristi Noem, a grassroots favorite and Republican nominee, has taken a 3% lead over incumbent Democrat Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin. This race has been extremely close over the last few months, with Noem regaining the lead after briefly losing it. This race is considered important because if Herseth-Sandlin cannot survive this wave, the Democrats will likely be facing even steeper losses than believed.
Noem is a farmer and state representative. She is a strong conservative who supports reducing the size of government and increased taxes. She states that she will support efforts to repeal the healthcare bill.
Herseth-Sandlin has been in Congress since 2004. She has been considered a moderate, and indeed voted against health care reform and cap and trade, but is being dragged down by the national attitude towards Democrats. Herseth-Sandlin earned a “C” on the Liberty Central Scorecard in part because of her “Yes” votes for the Stimulus bill and financial reform.
